What are Rules

Transform your raw data into clear and meaningful data

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Within Bright Analytics we are able to clean and structure raw data in a way that is more meaningful to users/clients. One way in which we achieve this is by applying rules.

Rules can help segment the data and obtain relevant pieces of information. For example, extract product names from campaign names.

There are two methods in which users can add rules to dimensions.

Method 1: Directly from the datasource

  • Navigate to the relevant meta table

  • Select the field you would like to apply the rule to

  • Click the numerical ID located to the left of the field name

  • This will open a separate window where you can start to add rules.

  • Click 'Add rule'

  • Under 'Rule name' users can give a description on the rule

  • 'Result value' denotes how values applicable will appear on the dashboard interface

  • Users can add conditions by pressing 'Add conditions'

The above example shows a rule being set on the placement name. If the placement name contains 'social' then the resulting channel will be labelled as 'Paid Social'

Method 2: Directly from dimensions

  • Locate the dimension where you would like to add a rule

  • Find the datasource, click on the 3 dots to open the menu

  • select 'Rules'

  • Follow the above on instructions on how to create rules.

Save, Preview and Run Rules

  • Once you have created the desired rules, hit 'Save'

  • Once the rule has been saved, it is good practice to review the SQL query to ensure everything is correctly set up

  • Once you are happy, hit 'Run'
