User Types and Content Sharing Permissions

The four Bright Analytics user types, what each can do and how sharing permissions work per user type

Overview:

Bright Analytics has four user types: View, Explore, Regular and Admin.

Each type determines what a user can do across the platform by default. Access builds cumulatively, each type includes everything the type before it can do, plus more.

View

A View user is a consumer of dashboard content. They can:

  • Export reports.

  • Take dashboard screenshots.

  • Set a dashboard or folder as their 'Home' (the page they land on after logging in).

  • Access content that has been shared with them.

  • View time-slices.

  • Can only access content that has been directly shared with them.

Explore

An Explore user can do everything a View user can, plus:

  • Override the date range on dashboards and reports.

  • Temporarily change filters on dashboards and reports.

  • Temporarily change the visualisation of a report.

  • Can only access content that has been directly shared with them.

Changes an Explore user makes are temporary - they reset and don't affect what other users see.

Regular

A Regular user can do everything an Explore user can, plus:

  • Create content: folders, dashboards, aliases, reports, time-slices, and commentary.

  • Engage with content that has been directly shared with them.

  • Edit content: rename, delete, or otherwise modify it.

  • Copy and paste existing content.

  • Share content with other users.

  • Permanently change filters or visualisations on dashboards and reports.

Admin

An Admin user can do everything a Regular user can, plus:

  • Access to all content created within the platform

  • Access the 'Feature Access' page.

  • Gain Data Model access, once Bright Analytics has enabled this feature

  • Gain Pipeline access, once Bright Analytics has enabled this feature

  • Manage users; creation and removal of users.

Content access overrides

It is possible to override a user's access for specific pieces of content, such as a folder or dashboard. For example, a Regular user can be given View-only access to a particular dashboard and while viewing that dashboard, they're held to the same rules as any View user.

Access can only be restricted this way, never extended. An Explore user can act as Explore or View, but never above Explore. Likewise, a Regular user can act as Regular, Explore, or View, but never as Admin.

A user can never act above their own set type.
